Nifty 50
India's 50 largest listed companies, grouped by industry - see which part of the market is moving the index
What this is
- The index is a bet on Indian credit growth first: private banks, SBI and NBFCs drive most of its earnings.
- Exporters (IT, pharma, parts of autos and metals) hedge a weak rupee; domestic plays (banks, FMCG, cement, power) ride Indian growth.
- Energy, metals and cement are the cyclical end - commodity prices and government capex decide their year.
- Concentration is the risk: a handful of the largest names move the whole index, so a stock-level event can look like a market call.
Why now
- Most Indian mutual fund, ETF and FPI money is benchmarked to the Nifty 50, so its moves set the tone for the whole market.
- Banks and lenders are well over a third of the index - RBI rate and liquidity moves now flow straight into it.
- IT, the second-largest block, is caught between US tariff and visa costs and AI changing how services are bought.
- Consumption got a lift from the Sep 2025 GST rate cuts and income-tax relief; the question is whether it lasts into FY28.
What to watch
- RBI policy rate, liquidity and bank credit vs deposit growth
- FPI flows and the rupee vs the US dollar
- Brent crude and India's import bill
- US tech spending, tariffs and H-1B rules (IT exporters)
- Monthly GST collections, auto sales and rural demand
- Government capex and the order books of L&T, BEL and the power utilities

Consumption
Staples, durables, retail, food delivery and vehicles - what Indian households spend on, from soap to SUVs.
