India's largest drugmaker: No. 1 in the Indian branded market, a growing global innovative-medicines (specialty) business and US generics via Sun and Taro
Price
₹1,778
snapshot 30 Oct 2026
Strengths
Global innovative medicines (Ilumya, Cequa, Winlevi, Leqselvi, Unloxcyt) were ~22% of sales in Q1 FY27 and growing double digits - the largest specialty franchise of any Indian company
No. 1 by share in the Indian pharmaceutical market with a chronic-heavy portfolio
Agreed (Apr 2026) to buy Organon for US$11.75bn EV - adds women's health, biosimilars and ~140-country reach; combined revenue ~US$12.4bn per company
Risks
Organon deal (expected to close early 2027) takes net debt/EBITDA to ~2.3x and brings integration risk
US generics fell ~10% YoY in Q1 FY27 on price erosion; Halol remains OAI (Jun 2025) and under import alert
Specialty launch spending (Leqselvi, Unloxcyt) is now a structural cost
Note: FY22 profit is depressed by a one-off Taro settlement/exceptional charge

Where it fits
Files ANDAs, challenges patents (Para IV) and manufactures generic tablets, capsules and complex dosage forms at scale in USFDA-inspected plants, selling to US wholesalers and pharmacy chains and to European and emerging-market buyers.
Why it matters
India supplies roughly four in ten generic prescriptions filled in the US, and the US is about a third of India's ~US$30bn pharma exports. US generics earnings drive sentiment for the large caps - and are now exposed to two shocks at once: the gRevlimid exclusivity tail ended in Jan 2026, and the US has set a generic-tariff timeline (0% to Jul 2028, 100% then 200%) for companies that do not build US capacity.
Where the value pool sits
Plain oral-solid generics face 5-10% annual US price erosion and are low-margin; profit concentrates in limited-competition products - first-to-file 180-day exclusivities, complex generics (inhalers, injectables, peptides like gLiraglutide/gSemaglutide) and drug-shortage opportunities. When one big product ages out (gRevlimid, gSpiriva, gMyrbetriq), earnings can drop sharply.
Key drivers
Complex-generic and first-to-file launch pipeline
US drug shortages favouring reliable Indian suppliers
GLP-1 / semaglutide patent expiries in Canada, Brazil, India and other markets from 2026
Emerging-market and European expansion to diversify from the US
Potential bottlenecks
USFDA facility status gates approvals: an OAI or warning letter freezes new launches from that plant
Consolidated US buyers (three purchasing groups buy most generics) hold pricing power
Complex generics need device, clinical-endpoint and bioequivalence capabilities few companies have
Investor metrics to watch
US revenue (US$m) per quarter and growth ex-big-product
Number of pending ANDAs / first-to-file opportunities
USFDA status of key sites (VAI / OAI / WL / import alert)
