Branded formulations (India derma/respiratory, Europe, emerging markets), US generics and the Ichnos Glenmark Innovation (IGI) biotech arm
Price
₹2,299
snapshot 30 Oct 2026
Strengths
IGI licensed trispecific antibody ISB 2001 to AbbVie for US$700m upfront plus up to US$1.225bn milestones and royalties (Sep 2025) - the biggest Indian out-licensing deal
Ryaltris (nasal spray) is a growing global specialty brand
Debt reduced after selling Glenmark Life Sciences (API) to Nirma
Risks
FY26 profit is inflated by the one-off AbbVie upfront - FY27 comparisons will be tough
Repeated USFDA compliance setbacks at several plants have held back US launches
Innovation spend remains high relative to the base business
Note: FY24 loss reflects discontinued operations and one-off charges around the Glenmark Life Sciences sale; FY26 includes the US$700m AbbVie upfront for ISB 2001

Where it fits
Discovers, in-licenses or acquires patented and differentiated medicines and sells them at innovator prices, mainly in the US and Europe through specialist sales teams - the step up from copying molecules to owning them.
Why it matters
Specialty is the only layer that escapes generic price erosion. Sun Pharma's innovative medicines (Ilumya, Cequa, Winlevi, Leqselvi, Unloxcyt) are now over a fifth of its sales; Glenmark's US$700m upfront from AbbVie for ISB 2001 and Wockhardt's FDA-approved antibiotic Zaynich show Indian R&D producing globally valued assets. Successes here re-rate a whole company.
Where the value pool sits
Innovator-style gross margins (80%+) and long patent lives, but heavy front-loaded spend: launch costs, specialist field forces and clinical trials. Value is binary - a Phase 3 failure or a slow launch can wipe out years of R&D (typically 6-9% of sales for Indian leaders; far more for pure R&D plays).
Key drivers
Out-licensing deals with global pharma (upfronts plus milestones and royalties)
Specialty acquisitions (Sun-Organon, US$11.75bn EV, expected to close early 2027)
Biopharma SHAKTI (₹10,000 Cr over five years, Budget 2026-27) and PRIP research incentives
Rising US demand for new antibiotics, dermatology and oncology assets
Potential bottlenecks
Small R&D budgets versus global innovators (Indian leaders spend ~US$100-400m a year)
Few Indian companies have US/EU specialty sales infrastructure
Slow Indian clinical-trial approvals (CDSCO) push trials abroad
Investor metrics to watch
Specialty / innovative share of revenue
R&D spend as % of sales and pipeline stage mix
Launch trajectories of new specialty brands (scripts, net sales)
Milestone and royalty income from out-licensed assets
