Where it fits
Makes the key starting materials (KSMs) and intermediates - e.g. isobutylbenzene for ibuprofen, para-aminophenol for paracetamol, penicillin G / 6-APA for antibiotics - that API makers convert into active ingredients.
Why it matters
This is India's biggest strategic gap: for several essential molecules the KSM or intermediate comes almost entirely from China. A Chinese export curb or price spike flows straight through to API makers' margins and medicine availability, which is why the government's PLI bulk-drug scheme (₹6,940 Cr) targets 41 critical KSMs/APIs.
Where the value pool sits
Mostly a commodity chemistry business with 10-20% EBITDA margins, driven by scale, integration and feedstock cost. PLI incentives (paid on sales for six years) improve the economics of import-substitution plants, but Chinese overcapacity can still undercut them.
Key drivers
PLI bulk-drug scheme: 48 projects approved, 18 APIs in commercial production by Mar 2026 (DoP / secondary reports)
Security-of-supply push by Indian and Western buyers
Captive integration by API majors (Aurobindo's Pen-G, Granules' PAP)
Potential bottlenecks
Chinese scale and cost advantage (cheaper energy, integrated chemical parks)
Fermentation capacity for antibiotics (penicillin G) is capital-heavy
