Where it fits
A camera module combines an image sensor, a lens stack, a focus actuator and a flex connector. They are aligned to microns by 'active alignment' machines in a clean room and supplied to phone, laptop and car makers.
Why it matters
Camera modules are one of the costliest parts of a phone after the chip and display, and almost all are imported today. ECMS pays a turnover-linked incentive of 5% of extra sales in year 1 falling to 2% by year 6 (minimum investment ₹250 Cr).
Where the value pool sits
High-volume, technology-licensed business dominated by Chinese and Korean makers (Sunny Optical, Q Tech, LG Innotek). Indian entrants mostly partner with them; margins depend on yield and on who owns the sensor sourcing.
Key drivers
Phone volumes in India (Apple, Samsung, Vivo, Oppo supply chains)
Automotive cameras (ADAS) and surveillance
ECMS turnover incentive of 2-5% of extra sales
Potential bottlenecks
Image sensors and lenses still imported (Sony, Samsung, Chinese lens makers)
Know-how sits with Chinese partners, needing Press Note 3 approval
Clean-room yield ramps
Investor metrics to watch
Monthly module output and yields
Customer approvals (which phone brands qualify the plant)
