Where it fits
Builds and integrates guided weapons: the missile itself (motor, seeker, warhead, airframe), the canister and launcher vehicle, and the radar and fire-control system that make a battery. DRDO usually designs; a production agency (mostly BDL or BEL) builds it under a Buy (Indian-IDDM) contract.
Why it matters
Air defence was the lesson of Operation Sindoor (May 2025), and 2026's approvals show it: the 3 Jul 2026 DAC cleared MRSAM, V-SHORADS and the man-portable anti-tank missile (MPATGM) for the Army, and BEL was still awaiting a ~₹30,000 Cr QRSAM order (Oct 2026). Missiles are consumed in training and war, so orders repeat.
Where the value pool sits
One of the largest and most profitable pools in Indian defence: missile systems carry high value per unit and DRDO-designed systems are effectively single-source. BDL's order book was ~₹26,000 Cr and BEL's ₹72,258 Cr (1 Jul 2026), with air-defence systems a large share of both.
Key drivers
Air-defence and anti-drone priorities after Operation Sindoor
DRDO systems maturing into bulk production (Akash, Astra, MRSAM, QRSAM, MPATGM)
Exports of Akash and BrahMos-class systems to friendly countries
Potential bottlenecks
Seekers, some propellant chemicals and electronics are still imported
Long user trials before bulk orders; CCS approval needed for the largest deals
Production ramp-up limited by sub-system suppliers (BDL cited supply-chain issues in FY26)
Investor metrics to watch
Order inflow vs guidance (BEL >₹55,000 Cr FY27 incl. QRSAM)
Order book / trailing revenue
Execution: revenue growth and gross margin per quarter
